Character Home One

This project has been a joy to build. A home with plenty of old fashioned character, but also has the large expanses of glass and indoor/outdoor living which we all need in a modern home. Cladded in linear board, it is a double aspect house designed by Jane. The road side aspect designed to look like an old ‘Merivale’ house, with colonial vertical sliding windows giving the old sash-window effect, plenty of angles and a huge bi-fold window allowing the morning sun to stream into the kitchen area. In contrast the lakeside aspect has a modern day ‘glass’ look with huge sliding doors and windows and a louvred area disguised as a pergola. The 526 black ‘dog-tooth’ corbels were very labour intensive but give the house a unique feature. The large outdoor living is decked with Garappa which flows through to the glossy oak timber flooring in the open plan kitchen, dining and living area.

Inside, three different stud heights allow the house to step down the slightly sloping section. Features include an English style country kitchen with an enormous oak bench centre aisle complete with window seat in the sun. A decorative ceiling in the kitchen and exposed beams decorate the living and dining which also boasts an enormous built-in bookcase. Picture rails, dado rails, deep skirtings and architraves throughout, with paneling through the hallway and up the stairs. Window seats and jutting windows in the bedrooms and real timber floors and vanity shelves feature in the bathrooms which are also paneled.
The latest geothermal central heating throughout with insulated garage doors and thermal, argon filled windows along with ample sun mean that this is designed to be a cosy home in winter too.
